On Thursday, February 13, a truck driver from Jonesboro, Illinois died in an accident on Interstate 55 in southeast Missouri. The wreck caused a fiery explosion which engulfed the vehicle and closed the interstate until the next morning.
At around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday night in Sainte Genevieve County near Bloomsdale the tanker truck drove off the roadway, landed in a ditch and then exploded. The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Sainte Genevieve County Coroner. A witness claimed that the fire from the explosion could be seen from a mile away.
According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, William R. Randolph, 47, was headed south in a 2009 Mack tractor trailer on I-55. He was near mile marker 157 when the truck suddenly veered to the left side of the road and struck the guardrail before jackknifing and rolling over. As the vehicle fell and crashed down the embankment, the trailer and the truck separated. The truck remained on the roadway, flipped over, and caught fire. The trailer fell down into the ravine, came to rest in a creek bed and caught fire.
Randolph appeared to be passing another vehicle right before the accident. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
The explosion and resulting fire became so hot that investigators were unable to even identify what material the truck had been transporting. Because the material could have been toxic, and because part of the vehicle landed in the creek, causing possible contamination, investigators from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources had to be called in.
The Missouri Department of Transportation also sent inspectors to take a look at the bridge where the accident occurred in order to determine whether the bridge was damaged.
The significant crash and subsequent investigations meant that the interstate remained closed until Friday morning. The northbound lanes were able to be reopened around 8 a.m. and by 9 a.m. the southbound lane was open as well.
Missouri Semi-Truck Accident Lawyers
Semi-truck accidents are especially alarming because of the potential for catastrophic injuries or even death that can result. The death of the truck driver in this single vehicle accident is tragic enough, but in similar accidents involving other vehicles it is not uncommon for there to be multiple fatalities. Because of a semi’s massive size and weight, drivers and passengers in smaller vehicles are more at risk of serious injury or death in the event of a collision with a semi truck. Staying out of their way is important in case something unexpected happens.
